Today was another ho-hum day weather-wise and the kids were restless. They've been loving getting out every day in the gorgeous July we had and they are readjusting to staying around the house. I needed something that would occupy everyone for awhile.
Here's what we decided to do - dough ornaments! We made these last Christmas for the tree, but I thought we could do this as a nonseasonal craft as well. The recipe is SUPER simple and the kids can help. Here's what you need:
- one large bowl
- 4 cups flour
- 1 cup salt
- 1 and 1/2 cups water
That's it! Preheat your oven to 300 degrees. Combine all ingredients in the bowl and knead for 10 minutes. I gave each kid a chunk to play with as I flattened out a circle for each child to make a hand print. We also made letters and happy faces. Then:
- bake at 300 degrees for 30 minutes and let cool. Paint!
I especially like that this is a 2 part craft so it works well for a day at home. We sculpted in the morning, had a snack and then painted later. They didn't turn out to be especially beautiful, but the kids had a blast!
