Sprout Foods- Organic Baby FoodReview

We were recently given the opportunity to review baby food from Sprout Foods. Two of us have children that were able to test this item and here are our reviews:

The Packaging: Light-weight, food pouch that is made layers of proprietary BPA-free materials that are proven to be safe for food processing. A foil layer is included to preserve the nutritional profile as well as the flavor and color of our food (this is why food pouch can not be placed in microwave).
Angela's Opinion: I loved the looks of this product. They are very visually appealing and have great colours that draw your attention. I loved that the package stood up on its own and took up way less room in my fridge and diaper bag. I did not like that you could not recycle the pouch but Sprout Foods does address this concern on their website and is trying to find a manufacturer that can make a recyclable pouch.
Tara's Opinion: I really liked the portion size of the Sprout-Organic Baby Food. My son could just finish one packet, which was great because I have a tendency of opening a jar and forgetting about the remainder I have stuffed in the fridge. These packages would be perfect for traveling, as you don't have to worry about packing breakable jars, as well as they don't take up much space. I also found that the graphics and writing were simple while still being nice to look at.

The Food Inside: The food is available for two different age stages: 6 months and up and 7 months and up. The beginner foods include flavours such as roasted pears, sweet peas and baked sweet potato. The interesting foods start in the Stage 2 foods where you can find Pasta with Lentil Bolognese, Peach Rice Pudding and Sweet Baby Carrots, Apples & Mango.
Angela's Opinion: I chose the Summer Squash, Yukon Gold Potatoes & Parmesan Pouch for my daughter to try (this is one flavour). I heated the food up in her dish and immediately noticed that it did not smell like 'regular' baby food-it smelled really good! My daughter took the first spoonful and made an odd face, but she asked for more and seemed to enjoy it. I think had we introduced more flavourful food like this earlier she would be eating more 'family food' by now.
Tara's Opinion: Seeing as I have the baby in the group, we had the privilege of testing 5 of the Sprout-Organic Baby Foods. We tested the Roasted Banana & Brown Rice, Roasted Apples, Baked Sweet Potato, Sweet Peas & Garden Green Beans, and Oatmeal with Roasted Cinnamon Applesauce. The Roasted Apples, as well as the Oatmeal with Roasted Cinnamon Applesauce were both big sellers with my son (and I enjoyed them too). The Baked Sweet Potato and Roasted Banana & Brown Rice both went down easily, which is a big feat because my son really isn't into eating right now. The Sweet Peas & Garden Green Beans weren't a favorite. I did have a taste and found the mint in them a little overwhelming myself, so I can understand how it would be a bit much for a 9 month old.

The Cost: A variety 12 pack costs $16.65 USD. That's just under $1.40 a package.
Angela's Opinion: This seems a bit expensive compared to most organic baby food. The organic food I buy at the local store costs me $1.00 or less a jar and its 4.5 oz versus the 3.5 oz in the pouches.
Tara's Opinion: I agree with Angela that $1.40 is a bit expensive for a 3.5 oz pouch. I do like to feed my son solely organic baby food, but I usually go with store brands that sell around 75 cents a jar.

The Shipping: Shipping is based on where you are located. They ship to Canada, United States and Puerto Rico. Free shipping over $75 within Continental US. Shipping to Canada is a bit pricey. It would cost us $16.40 to have a 12 pack mailed. Although when you add more packs the rate is better-it would be $18.27 to have 5 sets of 12 pouches mailed. They use Fed-Ex as a mail carrier and we have generally found this to be a more expensive way when shipping cross border.

The Shopping:Sprout Foods can be found online here and can also be found in select store locations.
Angela's Opinion: The site is like the packaging-very clean looking, uses bright colours and is visually appealing. I found it very easy to navigate the site and liked that I could easily find out different shipping costs.
Tara's Opinion: I enjoy the simplicity of the site, while still being visually appealing. I also like how they offer a wide variety of baby products like stainless steel and glass bottles, bpa free dishes as well as the CleanWell line of hand sanitizers and soaps, which I use on a daily basis as they are kid friendly.

Overall Opinions:
Angela's Opinion: I really liked the idea of organic baby food in pouches. I wish I could recycle the pouches but understand how not everyone recycles and Sprout Baby is doing their part by using less energy in the production and shipment. I loved the flavour options and the different choices that I had with Sprout Foods. The price was a bit high for me but I think if you lived in an area where organic food was not readily available this would be a reasonable price. I would find this product the most handy when I am travelling. The pouches are light-weight, don't take up a lot of space and are easy to feed to child from right out of the pouch.

Tara's Opinion: Although I am not organized enough to pre-order baby food online, I think that this is a great option for people who have trouble getting out to the stores. I enjoy the packages as well as the portion sizes, and the flavors were unique, and a nice change from the norm. All and all my son really enjoyed the Sprout-Organic Baby Food, especially the fruit flavors (he gets his sweet tooth from me), and I would definitely consider Sprout-Organics when purchasing baby food in the future.
